Zion Lutheran Church

THE PEWS

HARRISBURG

As the first Lutheran place of worship to stand in Harrisburg, Zion Lutheran Church remains an iconic symbol of faith, perseverance, and fellowship to those living in the surrounding area. The building that still stands today was constructed in 1839, and then updated again in 1867, in an effort to  increase space and repair the toll taken on the structure during the Civil War.

A new stairwell, windows, choir loft, and pews were installed during this time. The pews constructed in 1839 with the original church were box pews, with doors that opened and closed at the end of each row, leading into to the isle. The pews of 1867 are structured in a typical Victorian church.
